Using clean designs, classic fonts, luxury card stock and limited colour palettes, Cut & Chase’s Claire Palfreyman create small runs of modern yet timeless stationery for the discerning correspondent. Designs and prints may include lino cuts created in house, combined with type, set by hand and individually printed on vintage presses. Unlike digitally printed cards, letterpress items have that telltale impression in the surface - a physical sign of the press in action. So much more impressive than a text.
A former magazine sub-editor, Claire became a printers' intern aged 40+, before setting up Cut & Chase, and she loves the fact that she doesn't use any computers in her work. Working from her fledgling letterpress studio in Hanwell, Claire feels that nothing beats the physicality of opening drawers to select the type that will suit a particular job, and hand-setting each letter one-by-one to create new things.
